CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) is one of the biggest and most well-respected centres of scientific research in the world. Its focus is on fundamental physics, researching how the universe was created and how it functions. At CERN the biggest and most advanced scientific instruments are used to study fundamental particle physics. At the most basic level, the physicists of CERN are striving to work out the laws of nature by studying what happens when particles meet each other. Founded in 1954, the CERN laboratory straddles the Swiss-French border, but is still very close to Geneva. It was one of the first ever multinational companies, and it now has more than 20 member states.
